After listening to Boston talk radio today, one would have thought all the Red Sox would have done to win tonight was to phone ahead. The Red Sox also must have been listening, because for the first six innings of this game they looked the Kc Royals. Tim Wakefield was only able to go four innings, and was pulled due to his aching back. Wakefield battled through four tough innings giving up three runs and walking several others. It looked as though Luke Hudson had the game in hand until the seventh inning, thats when the Sox broke through and got a couple of baserunners for Doug Mirabelli, who paid them back by hitting his third homerun of the season, driving in three runs and tying the game. Manny put the Sox ahead for good in the eighth inning with a sac fly, and Jonathan Papelbon came in to pitch the nineth and record his league leading 27th save of the season. With the win tonight the Sox manage to stay .5 games ahead of the Fort Knox Bombers, strange coincidence, the Sox were .5 games ahead of the Yankees last year at this point. The Sox are four games over thier win pace of last year at this point.
The bad news for the Sox however was Tim Wakefield leaving the game with his strained back. Wakefield had been given extra time off between his last start, and it was hoped it would have helped him out. This is an interesting turn for a team that has struggled to fill a five man rotation for most of the season.
